Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a bar steel for a reinforcing rod with remarkably superior toughness at low temp. and seawater resistance by reducing the Si, P and S contents of a low Ni bar steel, controlling the temp. of finish rolling, and carrying out surfce hardening immediately after rolling.
CONSTITUTION: A steel consisting of ≤0.17% C, ≤0.20% Si, ≤0.70% Mn, ≤0.015% P, ≤0.005% S, 2W4% Ni and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities is hot rolled. The temp. of the finish rolling is controlled to about 750W 900°C, and cooling is carried out at ≥ about 20°C/sec cooling rate immediately after the rolling to provide a tempered martensite or bainite structure to the surface layer having ≥3mm thickness and a ferrite and pearlite structure to the interior. The resulting steel has ≥40kg/mm2 yield strength, ≥4kg-m Charpy impact value at -150°C and superior seawater resistance. By controlling the temp. of the finish rolling, the grain size is made smaller, and even the unhardened part undergoes no reduction in the toughness at low temp. owing to the samller grain size together with the effect of Ni. The lower Si, P and S contents result in improved toughness and remarkably enhanced seawater resistance.
