Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the sharpness of optical characteristics, by adding a material that has a property backward to the twisting direction or using a liquid crystal mixture containing an addition compound having the clockwise turning property and an addition compound having the counterclockwise turning property. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal mixture containing an optical active material having the clockwise turning property is enclosed into a cell that received a process by a rubbing or an oblique vapor deposition method so that the cell is twisted counterclockwise to the advancing direction of light. The V-T (voltage-transmittivity) curve is shown in the figure when it is measured at 20 deg.C. When a comparison of VsatVth is given between the liquid crystal containing no optical active material (shown by broken lines) and that containing an optical active material (shown by solid line), the former is 1.420 and the latter is 1.320. Thus it is clear that the latter has the sharpness. In the same way, both the sharpness and the speed of response can be improved if a liquid crystal mixture containing both the clockwise and counterclockwise turning optical active materials is enclosed into a cell that received a process so that it is twisted clockwise.
