Abstract
PURPOSE:To generate ultrasonic wave signals of large amplitudes and a uniform distribution directly in a metallic columnar body by flowing electric current instantaneously to the coil made of an insulated covered conductor wound on the outer side of said body. CONSTITUTION:A coil is formed by winding an insulated covered conductor on the outer side of a metallic columnar body of a cylinder or bar shape and electric current is flowed instantaneously to this coil. The metallic columnar body is deformed in a radial direction by the effect of the flux generated at that time, whereby ultrasonic wave signals are generated. For example, an insulated and covered conductor is wound on the outer side of a metallic columnar body 1 to form a coil 2. Both ends of such coil are connected via a switch 3 to a capacitor 4. On the other hand, an electric power source 5 is connected to a capacitor 4 via a rectifier 6 to charge the same. When electric current is flowed to the coil by closing the switch 3, the effect of the flux generated at that time forces the metallic columnar body to be deformed in a radial direction by magnetic force if it is a ferromagnetic material and by the effect of eddy current if it is a nonmagnetic material, thereby generating ultrasonic wave signals.
