Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for a rose like perfume, etc. safely in high yield at a low cost, by reacting dichloroethylbenzene with a specific amount of water at normal to higher pressure at a specific temperature, and dehydrochlorinating the resultant styrene chlorohydrin.
CONSTITUTION: Dichloroethylbenzene of formula I is reacted with water in an amount of 4 times or more, preferably 5W6 times, that of the compound at normal to higher pressure at a temperature of 100°C to give styrene chlorohydrin of formula II, which is then dehydrochlorinated by the conventional method to afford styrene oxyde of formula III useful as an intermediate for a roselike perfume or a sweetening agent, e.g. β-phenylethyl alcohol or phenylacetaldehyde. The compound of formula I is obtained in preparing styrene oxide from styrene and peracetic acid as a by- product in a waste liquor, and effectively utilized.
