Abstract

PURPOSE: To cut out a piece of glass plate having a desired shape from a thick glass plate, finely, by scratching one surface of the plate to the desired pattern, cooling the scratch bit by bit progressively with a cooling tool, and applying a perpendicular force to the glass encircled with the loop of the crack.
CONSTITUTION: A surface of a glass plate 1 is scratched with a glass cutter to a desired closed pattern, e.g. a circular pattern 2. A cooling tool 3 is applied to a part of the pattern 2, and transferred slowly along the pattern 2 bit by bit. The cooling tool is, e.g. a metallic container 3A having a flat bottom and filled with a cold material (e.g. a mixture of dry ice and alcohol). It is desirable to put a lubricant 4 (e.g. glycerine) between the contacting face of the cooling tool 3 and the glass surface. By repeating the revolving motion of the cooling tool 3 along the scratched line 2, a perpendicular crack 4 started from the scratch 2 develops gradually and reaches to the reverse side of the plate. The cooling tool 3 is removed from the plate, and a perpendicular force is applied to the glass encircled with the loop of the crack to cut out the circular glass plate.
