PURPOSE:To enable a few passes to split the breadth of slab into more than four fractions, by giving two or more different heights to the (n-1) couples of ring protuberances provided in the roll for splitting the slab into n-fractions, and by shifting the slab in the lateral direction in order to cause the highest ring protuberance to cut the cutting groove formed by another ring protuberance of lower height. CONSTITUTION:For instance, in case of splitting the breadth of slab into four fractions, the height of a central couple of ring protuberances 83, 84, is made shorter than that of two couples of ring protuberances 81, 82, 85, 86, on both sides. Then, at first, the middle of fractions (a), (b), of the slab and that of (c), (d), are cut off by the highest ring protuberances 81, 82, and 85, 86, and at the same time, the cutting groove is formed in the middle of fractions (b), (c), of the slab by another ring protuberances 83, 84. Next, the unsplit fractions (b), (c), are together shifted laterally toward the ring protuberances 81, 82, and said cutting groove is cut off by the ring protuberances 81, 82, for finishing the splitting work into four fractions.
