Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover acetic acid with high efficiency and economically, at an improved hydrolysis rate of methyl acetate, by the presence of an acidic catalyst and isobutylene and/or tertiary butanol in an amount of a specific range.
CONSTITUTION: Methyl acetate (M) is hydrolyzed in the presence of an acidic catalyst, e.g. sulfuric or p-toluenesulfonic acid, and isobutylene, tertiary butanol, or their mixture (I), at a molar ratio between (I) and (M) of 0.5W5:1, especailly 0.8W3:1, at 40°C or above, and each component except acetic acid is separated from the reaction mixture solution by distillation, to recover acetic acid finally. Tertiary butyl methyl ether useful as an antiknock agent may be produced simultaneously according to the reaction conditions.
