Abstract
PURPOSE: To recover a phenol in high yield, by oxidizing an alkyl aromatic compound in the liquid phase in the presence of a mercaptan as a catalyst, and distilling off a phenol from the resultant oxidation reaction product at a specific temperature to recover also the mercaptan in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: An alkyl aromatic compound such as a secondary alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. p-cymene, is oxidized with molecular oxygen in an organic solvent, e.g. acetic acid, in the presence of a mercaptan, e.g. an aromatic mercaptan having an acid dissociation constant less than 7.8, at 50W80°C and atmospheric pressure. The resultant oxidation reaction product is then distilled at 120°C or below, preferably at 100°C or below, for 10min to two hours, to recover a phenol in high yield. The residue is further distilled to recover the mercaptan, which may be reused in the oxidation reaction. The shorter time for the distillation may provide the higher recovery of the phenol.
