Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain titled polymer having good heat stability, base resistance and a desirable MW, by copolymerizing HCHO with a cyclic formal in the simultaneous presence of an anionic polymerization catalyst and a Lewis acid in an organic medium containing a MW modifier.
CONSTITUTION: Titled copolymer is obtained by carrying out copolymerization by introducing HCHO gas into an organic medium containing (A) a cyclic formal of formula I, wherein n is 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 10, or of formula II, wherein n is 2W15, (B) a MW modifier such as methylal or diethylacetal, (C) an anionic polymerization catalyst other than polyvalent metal chelate compounds, such as an alkali metal complex or an organotin (IV) compound, and (D) a Lewis acid such as AlCl3. Examples of the formal component (A) include ethylene glycol formal, 1,5-pentanediol formal and di- or triethylene glycol formal.
