Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for a heat-resistant and flame-retardant polymer and an intermediate for a crosslinking agent, agricultural chemical, etc. readily in high yield, by reacting a 2,2'-thiobisphenol derivative with AlCl3 in an aromatic organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are H or tertiary alkyl; however, R1=R2≠H), e.g. 2,2'-thiobis(4-tert-butylphenol), is reacted with Al Cl3 in an aromatic organic solvent, e.g. benzene or toluene, at 0°C or above to give the compound of formula II. The solvent is used in an amount of 1W10pts.wt. per pt. wt. the starting material of formula I. The amount of AlCl3 is equimolar with or usually a slight excess of the compound of formula I.
