Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber of a low transmission loss in a long wavelength region with good reproducibility by a procedure in which a glass material is deposited by a gaseous phase chemical reaction on the inner wall of a quartz reaction glass tube and then gaseous chlorine, etc., is flowed into the glass tube during a stage for solidification of the hollow glass fibers to prepare a preform. CONSTITUTION:The glass materials 13 from the SiCl4 evaporator 1, the POCl4 evaporator 3, the BBr3 evaporator 5, and the GeCl4 evaporator 10, together with Ar gas as a carrier gas, are flowed into the quartz reaction glass tube 8 containing SiO2 as the main component to deposit them on the inner wall of the glass tube 8, and then the glass tube 8 thus treated is heat-treated by the burner 9 to form a melt- filled glass which is, in turn, is spun to manufacture an optical transmission glass fiber. In this case, when said glass tube 8 is heated to form the melt-filled glass, gaseous Cl2 or its compound is flowed into said glass tube 8 and OH groups present in the deposits are removed. Thus, a glass fiber of excellent low transmission loss a compared with the conventional products can be obtained.
