Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate and recover a high purity of chromite sand by a procedure in which chromite sand used in mold is treated by a dry polishing method, mixed with quartz sand, and then ion-charged.
CONSTITUTION: A mixed sand charged in the hopper 1 after being used in a mold is put on the feeder 2 and then supplied from the chute 3 onto the rotary drum 4. Discharge electrodes in contact with he high-tension DC power source 7 are provided at the horizontal line 6" passing through the center of the drum and at the positions 6 and 6' within 90° in the opposite direction to the turning direction of the drum from the horizontal line 6". The sand on the drum is ion-charged by the discharge electrodes and then absorbed on the drum, while chromite sand, however, having a low volume resistivity is weakly adsorbed on the drum and quickly separated into the collecting troughs 8 and 9, whereas quartz sand having a high volume resistivity is strongly adsorbed on the drum and then scraped off by the brush 5 and collected into the collecting trough 10.
