Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high yield and in one stage, by the simple reaction of readily available and inexpensive N-β-hydroxyethylaniline or its derivative, in the presence of a catalyst consisting of copper as a main component, in the atmosphere of hydrogen.
CONSTITUTION: N-β-hydroxyaniline or its nuclear-substituted derivative is reacted in atmosphere of hydrogen, in the presence of a catalyst consisting of CuO-MaO- MnO2-SiO2, to give indole or its derviative. The starting material is prepared by the reaction of aniline which is available in a large amount inexpensive, with ethylene oxide, in high yield. The catalyst may preferable consist of 10W40mol% CuO, 10W30mol% MgO, 2W20mol% MnO2and 10W78mol% SiO2. The starting material has no problem of balance between o-and p-isomers, and the reaction may proceed without a comp licated stage. Therefore, the method is very advantageous industrially.
