Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a carbon fiber having improved properties, by melt spinning a pitchy substance having a specific calorific value, making infusible and carbonizing the resultant fiber to improve the stringiners, infusibility, and nonmelt sticking proparties between the fibers.
CONSTITUTION: A pitchy substance having a calorific value (ΔH) of 10W150cal/g measured by heating 7W13mg sample thereof at a heating rate of 5W15°C/min in the air with a differential calorimetric balance is melt spun, made infusible and carbonized. Examples of the pitchy substance include carbonaceous raw materials, e.g. heat-treated polyvinyl chloride, other than pitch. A substance having a calorific value (ΔH) of 15W80cal/g is preferably used among the pitchy substances.
