Abstract

PURPOSE:To control a liquid crystal layer heating heater in such a manner that the temperature of the liquid crystal layer does not become lower than the operating temperature range by measuring the temperature of the liquid crystal layer through detection of the change in the impedence of refractive index by the temperature of the liquid crystal layer itself. CONSTITUTION:The temperature at which the impedance of the liquid crystal layer changes abruptly changes with the frequencies applied, therefore, if suitable frequencies are selected, the on-off controlling of a heater is accomplished without assembling a bridge circuit. The change in the refractive index on the liquid crystal layer is detected by opposedly disposing a light source 8 and a photodiode D2 by way of a liquid crystal element 1 in-between, whereby the on-off controlling of a heater 6 is performed. It is also possible to use a GTO element in order to make circuit constitution simple, or to provide the one for detection separately from the electrode for displaying and an electric power source in order to facilitate temperature setting or to provide plural detecting parts in order to be adapted in the case when there is a difference in the temperature distribution of liquid crystal elements.
