Abstract
1447903 Resins for printing ink NIPPON OIL CO Ltd 23 Jan 1974 [23 Jan 1973] 03125/74 Heading C3P Resins suitable for use in printing inks and having softening points of at least 100‹ C. are obtained by reacting together (A) a resin obtained by thermal polymerization at 150-350‹ C. in the presence or absence of an inert hydrocarbon solvent of a mixture of (i) at least one of cyclopentadiene, dicyclopentadiene or C 1-3 alkyl-substituted derivatives thereof and (ii) an unsaturated alcohol or an organic acid ester thereof, and (B) a C 8 or higher saturated or unsaturated monocarboxylic acid. When resin (A) contains monomer units (ii) which are esters, the reaction with (B) may occur directly by transesterification or an intermediate hydrolysis step may be effected to produce hydroxyl groups. The products may also include reacted rosin or resol-type phenolic resin. In examples, (1) dicyclopentadiene/allyl alcohol copolymer is reacted with linseed oil fatty acid; (2) dicyclopentadiene/crotyl alcohol copolymer is reacted with tall oil fatty acid; (3) a copolymer of a mixed C 5 dimer with cinnamyl alcohol is reacted simultaneously with castor oil fatty acid and maleinized rosin; and (4) dicyclopentadiene/ vinyl acetate copolymer is hydrolysed, then reacted with eleostearic acid, and then further reacted with a resol-type phenolic resin.
