Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the formation of defects due to surface cracking of continuously cast slab in continuous casting of carbon steel, by normalizing the cooling rate during cooling process of the cast slab after solidification in relation to the composition and the elements of the molten steel.
CONSTITUTION: In continuous casting of molten carbon steel contg. 0.01W1.0% C, and contg. Si, Mn as fundamental components, steel having a composition shown in the ranges IWIII of figure (a) gives products highly sensible to surface cracking because of the relation of the content of impurities P and S to that of C. Hence in continuous casting of molten steel having composition shown by the range IWIII of the figure (a), mean cooling rate from the melting temp. to 900°C is set in the range 0.01W1°C/sec for the steel having S content corresponding to the brittle ranges I, II of figure (b) for the steel contg. <0.25% C, and for the steel having P content corresponding to the brittle range III of figure (c) for the steel contg. >0.25% C. The cast slab is passed the horizontal straightening point of a curved continuous casting apparatus at ≥900°C surface temp. of the cast slab, hereby the formation of surface cracking of the continuously cast slab is reduced.
