Abstract
PURPOSE: To fluidize and recover petroleum sludge deposited on the bottom of a tank effectively in a short time, by a method in which a petroleum solvent, and a surfactant, together with a specific proportion an aromatic solvent, are added to a petroleum sludge to dissolve and disperse the sludge in these solvents.
CONSTITUTION: To a petroleum sludge deposited on the bottom of a tank for crude oil, heavy oil, etc., a petroleum solvent, e.g., heavy oil or light oil, in a amount of 0.5W20 times as heavy as the sludge, 0.01W1wt% an oil-soluble surfactant, e.g., anionic, nonionic, or cationic ones, and an aromatic solvent having a boiling point of 150W350°C at ordinary pressure and a specific gravity of 0.95 or more at 25°C, e.g., xylene bottom oil or naphthalene oil, in an amount of 0.1wt% or more on the basis of the sludge but corresponding to one half or less of the petroleum solvent used are added and heated at 40W80°C with stirring to dissolve and disperse the sludge in these solvents.
