Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the recording medium whereon recording is performed in a stable manner by a method wherein a thin film whose main constituents are C and S is formed on a substrate through electric discharge in CS2 gas and the transformation of concavities, the change of optical density, etc. are caused by irradiation of an energy beam, such as a laser beam. CONSTITUTION:First, the substrate 7 formed of glass, polyester or the like is fitted to a substrate-fixing holder 4 and a container 3 is evacuated. After that, CS2 gas or the mixed gas of SC2 gas and inactive gas such as Ar is introduced by 10-10<-3> Torr. Then, the gas is caused to make electric discharge by impressing high-frequency voltage on an electrode 6 so as to form the thin film 8 composed of C and S on the substrate 7, thus the aimed recording medium 9 being obtained. On this recording medium 9 is irradiated an energy beam such as a laser beam, a flash light and electron rays and recording is performed on the basis of the resultant change in optical density and refractive index.
