Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate of pharmaceuticals and pesticides, economically, in a short step, by reacting 5-methyl-3-furancarboxylic acid ester with a specific amount of bromine, and then subjecting the reaction product to Friedel-Crafts reaction with benzene.
CONSTITUTION: A 5-methyl-3-furancarboxylic acid ester of formula II (R is ester residue) is made to react with equimolar amount of or slightly excessive (1.0W1.1 times mole of) bromine at room temperature (especially ≤10°C) to obtain a 5- bromomethyl-3-furancarboxylic acid ester of formula III selectively. The compound of formula III is reacted with benzene in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to afford a 5-benzyl-3-furancarboxylic acid ester of formula I in a short reaction step, economically. The compound of formula I is useful for the synthesis of the alcohol moiety of a synthetic pyrethroid compound useful especially as an insecticide.
