Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare reproducibly and accurately an alkylene oxide polymer having an arbitrary polymerization degree, by adding 2,2'-azobis-(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) as a polymerization degree-controlling agent to the polymerization system.
CONSTITUTION: Preferably 0.01W5wt% of 2,2'-azobis-(2,4-dimethyl-valeronitrile) (ADVN) is added to (A) the system for the catalytic polymerization of an alkylene oxide or (B) an alkylene oxide polymer. In the case of (A), the polymerization temperatue is preferably 0W60°C. In the case of (B), the powdery polymer is mixed with ADVN directly or in a solvent and treated at preferably 50W100°C.
EFFECT: As the decomposition rate of the ADVN is high, the treating time is reduced. As the amount of the residual radical is small, the stability of the polymer is improved.
