Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the ride comfort and steering stability by a method wherein the increase of hydraulic pressure in a low damping force range in the initial stage of the piston stroke is absorbed and dampened by the compression force in a gas chamber sealed by an elastic film coat. CONSTITUTION:During the compression stroke, a piston 4 increases the pressure of the hydraulic oil, the increased hydraulic pressure acts on a film coat 14 through an orifice 13, a gas chamber 16 is compressed, an amount of the oil corresponding the compressive deformation escapes into the space or clearance between the inside wall of the film coat 14 and the outside wall 2a of the inner cylinder through the orifice 13, to generates a low damping force in the initial stage of the stroke of the piston and to obtain a initial-stage stroke damping force. When the piston 4 further advances as far as the hydraulic pressure becomes equal to the total pressure of the elastic force of the film coat 14 and reaches the set pressure of a bottom valve 11, the valve 11 operates, the hydraulic oil flows out into a chamber 8 through an oil passage 11a and a passage 17, and a rated damping force is obtained.
