Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain titled resin which can be used in high proportion, in laminated sheets etc., without increasing their flammability, by employing, as a plasticizing modifier, a polyether having an epoxy group at one end and a structural part consisting of a benzene ring to which oxygen and halogen are attached.
CONSTITUTION: A modified phenol resin (varnish therefrom also included) used in the production of laminated sheets, etc., is prepared by employing as a modifier for plasticization, a polyether having an epoxy group at one end and a structural part consisting of a benzene ring to which oxygen and halogen are attached, such as a polyether represented by formula I, wherein R1 and R2 are each H, CH3, a group or foumula II or III, wherein X is Cl or Br, or formula IV, wherein R3, R'3 and R4' are each H or CH3, R5 is a group of formula V, VI or VII, wherein X is Cl or Br and R6 is a group of formula VIII or IX, wherein X is defined as above.
EFFECT: The modifier itself is self-extinguishing and so the reduction in a flame retardant content is possible when used in combination with a flame retardant. Therefore, as compared with laminated sheets prepared by using conventional flame retarding and plasticizing modified phenol resins, the laminated sheets prepared by using this modified phenol resin show improved impact resistance, when the flame retardancies are same.
