Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high-molecular diallyldialky1ammonium chloride polymer, by polymerizing diallyldialky1ammomium chloride at a specific temperature in the presence of a water-soluble azo initiator.
CONSTITUTION: A diallyldialky1ammonium chloride is polymerized at a temperature lower than 55°C, by use of 0.2W1.5wt%, based on the monomer, of a water- soluble initiator. The necessity to set the polymerization temperature at below 55°C is considered to be attributable to the specificity of carbon radicals generated by the decomposition of the azoinitiator. Generally, compared with carbon radicals, oxygen radicals from a peroxide type initiator show higher ability to initiate the reaction and as well, act strongly upon the termination reaction. The similar effect is possible also in case of carbon radicals when the temperature is high, and this is considered to be the reason for an unsatisfactorily low molecular weight.
