PURPOSE:To increase the number of characters to be inputted without exchanging the device itself, by providing a pattern display mechanism to a key top of a keyboard. CONSTITUTION:Either one of keys 31-3n provided with a pattern display 2 consisting of liquid crystals or light emitting diodes to a key top 1, is depressed, detection circuits 41-4n confirm it and inform it to a decoder 5. The decoder 5 reads out the pattern the same or equivalent to the depressed keys from a pattern storage circuit 6 via a drive circuit 7 and transfer it to a data processor. Further, based on the request from the data processor, a pattern transmission circuit 9 reads out the pattern displayed on the keys 31-3n from a storage circuit 8 and displays the pattern on the keys via transfer circuits 101-10n. At the same time, the transfer circuits store this pattern to the circuit 6 via a circuit 7. Thus, the data of the display of the keys 31-3n and the device 6 can be changed and the input of new patterns is made possible.
