Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a main component of a zinc coating material or a raw material for an optical fiber in high selectivity, by reacting metallic silicon powder with an alcohol in the presence of a copper catalyst in a solvent in a closed system.
CONSTITUTION: Metallic silicon powder, preferably pulverized to a particle size of 100μ or less, is reacted with a 1W10C aliphatic alcohol in the presence of metallic copper or a compound thereof, e.g. a halide or oxide, as a catalyst in a hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. decane or dodecane, in a volume of 1mlW10l per gram of the silicon at 100W300°C, preferably 150W250°C, in a closed system to give a tetraalkoxy silane.
