Abstract

PURPOSE:To attain complete interchangeability of the thermal head unit by a method wherein the dimension from a reference for fitting to a heating element of the thermal head unit is adjusted easily and precisely to a specified dimension in a condition equivalent to the mounted condition by an adjusting system through comparison with a reference gage. CONSTITUTION:By using the reference gage 14 for indicating such a position of the heating element 8 as to achieve the optimum printing condition, the relative positions of a head unit fitting reference pin 16 provided at a head unit mount 15 and a reference marker 17c provided within the field of view of a split image microscope 17 are set to obtain the specified dimension L0 therebetween. Then, the reference 11a for fitting the thermal head unit 1 is attached to the pin 16, and the position spaced from the reference 11a by the dimension L0 is pressed at a pressure P. While maintaining a height H0+ or -h above a thermal head unit fitting reference surface 11b at the last mentioned position, a leaf spring 5 is moved forward and backward with respect to a head holder 3 so as to adjust the position of the heating element 8, bringing it into register with the reference marker 17c.
