Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce a high quality cellulose ether having good solubility and membrane-forming properties, by reacting carboxymethylcellulose with an ethyl halide in the presence of caustic alkali under a specified condition.
CONSTITUTION: In the production of an improved caroxymethylcellulose (CMC) by reacting CMC with an ethyl halide in the presence of caustic alkali, the following combination is used as the treating condition: (1) the weight ratio of an aqueous caustic alkali solution to CMC during CMC mercerization is 2W4, (2) the weight ratio of an aqueous caustic alkali solution to CMC during CMC mercerization is 2W4, and (3) the temperature and time of the etherification are 130W150°C (0.5W6hr) for 1st stage and 50W120°C (1W6hr) for 2nd stage.
