Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled pigment having a high electrical insulating property and suitable for facing materials of an automobile, by washing metallic particles with a hydrocarbon solvent, reducing the amount of a grinding aid attached to the surface thereof to a specific value or less, and coating the surfaces thereof with a specific polymer.
CONSTITUTION: Metallic particles, e.g. alumina, prepared by grinding in the presence of a grinding aid are washed with a hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. mineral spirit, to reduce the amount of the grinding aid attached to the surface thereof to 1wt% or less, preferably 0.5wt% or less. The resultant metallic particles are then dispersed in a hydrocarbon solvent heated to 40W120°C and subjected to the addition reaction with n-(trimethoxysilypropyl)ethylenediamine with stirring to form a polymeric film of the diamine on the surfaces of the metallic particles and give the aimed pigment. Preferably, the addition of 0.5W5wt% fatty acid or an aliphatic amine and/or aliphatic fatty acid amide to the pigment satisfies an undersize percentage through a 44μ screen ≥99.9%.
