Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction of polyoxymethylene with an alkylene oxide in the presence of a specific catalyst produces the titled polymer with a predetermined molecular weight, high thermal stability and high resistance to base.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of polyoxymethylene with a number-average molecular weight of more than 10,000 with an alkylene oxide of the formula (R is H, alkyl, allyl; m is 2W6) is effected in the presence of a catalyst of a complex from a Lewis acid such as BF3, SnCl4 or TiCl4 and a polyether, preferably a polyalkylene oxide of 10W10,000 average polymerization degree to insert the oxyalkylene linkages into the main chains of polyoxymethylene. When necessary, a molecular weight controller such as methylal is added during the reaction.
EFFECT: The activity of the catalyst is high and the reduction in the molecular weight of the polymer is lessened during the reaction.
