Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a saponin which is regarded as the same compound as that of the saponin component of a ginseng, by extracting Gynostemma pentaphyllum Makino, a cucurbitaceous plant, with water or water-containing lower alcohol, subjecting the extracted solution to desorption and adsorption treatment repeatedly so that it is purified and separated.
CONSTITUTION: Gynostemma pentaphyllum Makino is extracted with water or water-containing lower alcohol. The extracted solution is treated with a nonionic adsorption resin, and the adsorbed substance is eluted with a lower alcohol. The eluted solution is treated with alumina and eluted with a lower alcohol to give a crude saponin. This saponin is purified and separated by a nonionic adsorption resin and/or silica gel to give a saponin shown by the formula [R1 is β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→2)-β-D-glucopyranosyl, etc.; R2 is β-D-glycopyranosyl (1-6)-β-D-glycopyranosyl, etc.]. This saponin is regarded as the same compound as that of a saponin of a ginseng which shown various kinds of medicinal effects.
