Abstract

PURPOSE:To correct a phase shift between the P and S polarized wave components of a light beam traveling over reflection, by using a transparent board body, having specific optical characteristics, as a light wave directing board. CONSTITUTION:On both sides of the 1st medium 7 made of a transparent body providing negative double reflection (therefore having the refractive index of an S polarized wave component greater than that of a P polarized wave component with regard to light incident at right angles to the flank of the transparent body), the 2nd media 8 and 8' less in refractive index than the 1st medium 7 are arranged to form a light wave directing board. When the relative refractive index of the 1st medium 7 to the 2nd media 8 and 8' as to the S polarized wave component is equal to that as to the P polarized wave component, a phase shift occurs between both the polarized wave components, but the said constitution nearly compensate the phase shift because the value of the S polarized wave component is greater than that of the P polarized wave component, so that even when a light wave directing board having large value l/d (where d is the thickness of the 1st medium and l is the length of the optical path) (namely, high in the frequency of the reflection of the light beam) is used, phase angles of both the polarized wave components can be equalized easily.
