Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a new Galvanic photocell by using a flavinprotein enzyme prosthetic group of electron transition as an essential solution for the anolyte. CONSTITUTION:An anolyte 2 and an anode 1 which is connected to a P type semiconductor GaP placed in a glass tube, are provided in an anode container. The anode container is divided into two chambers by a glass slit diaphragm, one of which is connected to a catholyte 8 by means of a salt bridge 4 made of potassium chloride. The catholyte 8 and a cathode 6 which is made of an N type semiconductor, TiO2, are provided in a cathode container; a platinum wire is fitted into the end of the cathode 6, which is charged in a glass tube. When light is irradiated on the anolyte 3, hydrogen is generated from the platinum wire at the end of the cathode 6, which is connected to the anode 1 by means of a conductive wire. For the anolyte 3, a flavinprotein enzyme prothetic group, such as NAD, (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), NADP or FAD is used as an essential solution, and the addition of a spectrum sensitizer such as polyacid is preferred. As the catholyte 8, an acid solution of sulfuric acid or the like is used.
