Abstract
PURPOSE:To perform electrolysis at much lowe potential by binding a gas and liquid permeable cathode layer consisting of ruthenium black on the surface of an ion exchange membrane. CONSTITUTION:Ruthenium black consists of metallic ruthenium which is made into the form of fine sponge, and has specific surface areas of about 0.1-100. An electrode layer is used by using a binder of a fluorine-contg. polymer, for example, polytetrafluoroethylene, and 0.05-5 parts the binder is added to 10 parts the ruthenium black. The formed gas and liquid permeable cathode layer has 0.01- 1,000mu average pore sizes and 20-99% porosities. If necessary, a suitable solvent and surfactant are added to form the cathode layer, and the electrode particles and the binder are uniformly mixed. A fluorine-contg. cation exchange membrane contg. sulfonic acid or carboxylic acid as its exchange groups is used for the ion exchange membrane, and water, halogen acid or aqueous alkali halide or alkali carbonate soln. is used as the aqueous soln.
