Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a recording material for pressure-sensitive recording paper, having self-developing property eliminated, by a method wherein a 4-azaphthalide compound with a specified structure is utilized as an electron donating color developer, and the content of isomers of said compound is limited.
CONSTITUTION: A 4-azapthalide compound shown by formula I [wherein A is formula II-IV (R1WR3 are 1W4C alkyl, benzyl; R4 is 1W4C alkyl, benzyl, phenyl)], for example, 3-(1-ethyl-2-methylindol-3-yl)-3-(2-ethoxy-4-diethylaminophenyl)-4- azaphthalide of formula V, is used as an electron donating color developer. Preferably, the content of a 7-azaphthalide compound of formula VI, which is an isomer of the compound of formula I, is controlled to less than 10wt%, preferably, 2% or less. Compounds I, wherein A is a group of formula III or IV, are new.
