Abstract

PURPOSE:To extend service life, to obtain a high power output and also to increase reliability by providing passages for insulating liquid at both a split electrode and a discharge stabilizing resistor or at the split electrode alone and by cooling with said insulating liquid. CONSTITUTION:In a lateral excitation type gas laser, passages 18 for pure water 19 which is an insulating liquid are formed on a container 20 in such a way that a split electrode 2 and a discharge stabilizing resistor 4 can be cooled directly, the pure water 19 is circulated by a pump 15 and the heat of the pure water 19 which has been heated by a heat exchanger 17, is discharged. Moreover, in order to easily secure the insulating property of the pure water 19, an ion exchange resin 16 is provided in a circulation system. When a negative electrode is cooled and its temperature falls down, the thermionic emission from the negative electrode is suppressed, thereby enabling to extend its service life, to increase the allowable limit of discharge input with which a stabilized glow discharge can be maintained and to obtain a high power output as well.
