Abstract
PURPOSE:To impart excellent antiwear property to Ti or a Ti alloy by a method wherein Ti or the Ti alloy is heated in a mixed gas atmosphere comprising an inert gas and a nitrogen containing gas and cooled after being held in a molten condition for a predetermined time. CONSTITUTION:Ti or the Ti alloy heated and melted in a mixed gas atmosphere comprising an inert gas such argon or helium and nitrogen or an ammonia gas for a predetermined time by a heat source such as arc heat, electron beam, laser or high frequency to infiltrate and diffuse atomic nitrogen into the molten metal. Subsequently, upon cooling, a hardened layer with excellent antiwear property is formed.
