Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound which is a synthetic intermediate for an antimicrobial agent in high yield, by reacting a 6β-aroylaminopenicillanic acid sulfoxide with a specific halogenating agent to give the acid halide, and reacting the resultant acid halide with an alcohol.
CONSTITUTION: A 6β-aroylaminopenicillanic acid sulfoxide is reacted with a triarylphosphine dihalide to give an acid halide, which is then reacted with an alcohol to afford an aroylaminopenicillanic ester sulfoxide. The reaction is preferably carried out in an inert organic solvent in the presence of a base under cooling. The reaction time is about 1W5hr. The time of adding the alcohol is preferably early to avoid the decomposition of the acid halide.
