Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent shrinkage crack from occuring in the wall thickness crossing part of a casting by adding a proper amount of a thermoplastic resin to self-hardening molding sand in casting a thin-walled steel casting witn an org. self-hardening mold.
CONSTITUTION: In molding a mold with org. self-hardening molding sand compounded with 0.6W1.5wt% furan resin, a suitable amount of a thermoplastic resin such as polypropylene, polyethylene, methacrylic resin is added to org. self-hardening molding sand, and the mold is molded. In casting a steel casting by pouring molten steel after this mold has hardened, the thermoplastic resin absorbs the expansion of the mold and easily decomposes to a gas to 150W300°C; therefore, the parts where the thermoplastic resin has existed are made vacant, resulting in considerably increased deformation capacity of the mold. Hence, at the solidification shrinkage owing to cooling of the steel casting, the occurrence of cracking in the crossing parts of the thickness caused by the shrinkage retardation of the steel casting by the mold is prevented.
