Abstract

PURPOSE: To facilitate the separation of a polymer and obtain the titled polymer useful as a sanitray article, etc., by suspending an aqueous solution of acrylic acid having a specific partial neutralization degree in an aliphatic ketone, and polymerizing the acrylic acid in the presence of a water-soluble polymerization catalyst and a water-soluble high polymeric dispersing agent.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of caustic soda is dropped to acrylic acid under cooling to give an aqueous solution of acrylic acid having a partial neutralization degree of 50W90mol%. The resultant solution is then suspended in an aliphatic ketone, e.g. acetone. The suspension thus obtained is polymerized in the presence of a water-soluble radical polymerization catalyst, e.g. potassium persulfate, and a water-soluble high polymeric dispersing agent, e.g. polyethylene oxide having a molecular weight ≥2,000,000, at 40W70°C to deposit the polymer in the form of particles. The amounts of the additives to be used are as follows: 0.01W0.50mol% polymerization catalyst and 1W5wt% high polymeric dispersing agent.
