Abstract
PURPOSE:To change the refractive index of depositing core glass layers by heating a glass tube from the outside with auxiliary burners apart from a main burner to change to temp. periodically. CONSTITUTION:A plurality of fixed type auxiliary burners are set at predetermined positions apart from a moving type main burner, and the flow rates of fuel gases fed to the auxiliary burners are controlled so as to be changed periodically. For example, O2 is introduced into bubblers 12, 13, 14 holding SiCl4, GeCl4 and POCl3 through mass flow controllers 1, 2, 3, respectively to make the feed to reaction tube 15 constant. Tube 15 is heated with moving type main burner 17 to form soot on the inner wall of tube 15. A plurality of fixed type auxiliary burners 19-21 are set at the predetermined positions, and the flow rates of fuel gases are controlled with mass flow controllers 5-7, 9-10 so that they are changed in accordance with the number of core glass layers to be deposited. After forming the layers the hollow of tube 15 is eliminated by collapsing, and they are drawn to obtain an optical fiber having a refractive index which changes periodically in the longitudinal direction.
