Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily obtain modified polyolefin without using any catalyst, by irradiating powdered polyolefin with electronic rays in the presence to oxygen, and thereafter adding an ethylenic unsaturated monomer cotaining carbonyl groups and heating the mixture.
CONSTITUTION: Powdered polyolefin such as polyethylene or polypropylene is fed on a conveyor 5 through a vibrating sifter 4, and thereafter irradiated with electronic rays in the atmosphere containing 1% or more of oxygen within an electronic ray irradiating apparatus, whereby a peroxide structure is introduced into polyolefin molecules. Thereafter, an ethylenic unsaturated monomer containing carbonyl groups (e.g. acrylic acid, maleic acid, and crotonic acid) is mixed with said irradiated powdered polyolefin in a ratio of the former to the latter varying within the range of 0.01%W10wt%, and the mixture is heated to yield objective modified polyolefin.
