Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce titled polymer useful as a waste water treating agent or an agent for paper making, by dispersing an aqueous solution of a cationic vinyl monomer into a solution of a vinyl polymer in a hydrophobic organic solvent, and subjecting the resulting dispersion to polymerization.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution (concentration 50W90wt%) of a cationic vinyl monomer of the formula, wherein R1 is H or CH3; R2 and R3 are each a 1W4C alkyl or a 2W4C hydrocarbyl; R4 is H, R2 or benzyl; A is O or NH; B is a 1W4C alkylene, a 2W4C hydroxyalkylene and X- is an anionic counter ion or a mixture thereof with other vinyl monomers is dispersed in a solution consisting of (A) a hydrophobic organic solvent such as mineral oil and (B) a polar vinyl (co) polymer in component (A), such as poly(ethylene/ethyl acrylate). The resulting dispersion is subjected to polymerization at 30W90°C for 1W10hr in the presence of a water-soluble initiator to form poymer beads, 0.1W5mm in diameter, suspended in the solvent. If desired, the polymer beads are separated.
