Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for an agricultural chemical and a polymerization adjustor for synthetic rubber in high selectivity, purity and yield, by bringing an easily available aromatic olefin into contact with hydrogen sulfide in the presence of an addition reaction catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic olefin of formula I (X is H, halogen, nitro, etc.; R1 is H, alkyl, aryl, etc.; R2 and R3 are H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, etc.; however, either one of R2 and R3 is H and the other represents another group when R1 is H; n and m are 1 or 2) or a dimer thereof is subjected to the catalytic reaction in the presence of an addition reaction catalyst, e.g. phosphorus sulfide or phosphoric acid, to give a compound of formula II. The selective ionic addition reaction of hydrogen sulfide takes place at the carbon atom of the benzyl position. The formation of by-products, e.g. sulfide or disulfide, containing sulfur due to the successive reaction of the product of the formula II can be avoided, and the aimed substance can be isolated and purified readily.
