Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a liquefied coal useful as a light fuel oil, gasoline or chemical raw material, having a low boiling point at a high coal liquefaction ratio, by heating and liquefying coal mixed with specific amounts of an iron component and sulfur component containing no iron.
CONSTITUTION: Coal is heated with or without hydrogen and liquefied. In the process, 100pts.wt. crushed coal is mixed with one pt.wt. or more iorn component, calculated as iron, e.g. ferric hydroxide, and one pt.wt. sulfur component, calculated as sulfur, e.g. elemental sulfur containing no iron, and the coal is liquefied by heating at a temperature in the range of 300W900°C, preferably 400W500°C. Preferably, 50W400pts.wt., based on 100pts.wt. coal, solvent capable of slurrifying the coal, e.g. tetralin, is added to liquefy the coal.
