Abstract

PURPOSE: To continuously carry out polymerization of synthetic resin chips, which provides uniformity in polymerization degree and is low in heat loss, by subjecting the resin chips to solid-phase polymerization at a temperature lower than the m.p. while vacuum-drying them continuously under a high vacuum, and then cooling then continuously.
CONSTITUTION: Chips A of a synthetic resin such as polyester are fed into a preheater 18; heated therein to a temperature (about 200W230°C) higher than the glass transition point to promote crystallization of their surfaces; then introduced to a vacuum preheater 12; after heating to about 200W230°C, vacuum-dried and transferred to a rotary drum 3 within a vacuum chamber 1 under a high vacuum, degree of vacuum ≥ about 1 Torr. Next, the chips are transferred along the ribbon screws 4 mounted within the rotary drum 3, and during the transfer by the screw the chips are subjected to solid-phase polymerization at a constant temperature. After completion of the solid-phase polymerization, the chips are transferred through a discharge port 22 to a cooling tank 28, cooled therein by inert gas and discharged from a discharge valve 31.
