Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the responding properties and contrast by crystallizing the surface of an electromagnetic material layer contacting with an ionic-conductive material layer to form an ionic diffusion controlling layer. CONSTITUTION:Electromagnetic material layer 2 of WO3 or the like of 0.3mum thickness is formed on patterned transparent electrically-conductive film 1 by vapor deposition, and by being irradiated with energy beams such as laser beams, the surface of layer 2 is heated and converted into crystallized layer 2' capable of controlling ionic diffusion up to about 0.05mum depth. Ionic-conductive film 3 of lithium nitride or the like of about 0.15mum thickness is then formed on layer 2'. After forming a platinum layer on layer 3 as opposite electrode layer 1' by vapor deposition, the void region is sealed with epoxy resin 6 or the like to obtain an electrochromic element.
