Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high conversion and in high selectivity, by using zeolite which is subjected to aluminum removing treatment by an acid as a catalyst for catalytic cracking in gaseous phase, cracking a 1,1-diarylethane catalytically in gaseous phase.
CONSTITUTION: A 1,1-diarylethane shown by the formula I(R1W6 is H or CH3) undergoes catalytic cracking in the presence of a catalyst of zeolite which is subjected to aluminum removing treatment by an inorganic acid, e.g., hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, etc. and an organic acid, e.g., acetic acid, etc., to give compounds shown by the formulas II and III. A molar ratio of silica/alumina of zeolite subjected to aluminum removing treatment is 5W400. In the preparation of the catalyst, for example, zeolite is refluxed using the acid under heating, the treated solution is separated, and new treatment is carried out again, and these operations are done repeatedly. Zeolite thus prepared has a high molar ratio of silica/alumina, and extremely enlarged specific surface, micropore volume, and average pore diameter, so that the activity and selectivity of the catalyst improves extremely.
