Abstract

PURPOSE: To maintain sufficient exhaust gas recirculation ratio during the supercharging period by connecting an exhaust gas recirculation passage to an exhaust passage at the upstream of the exhaust turbine of a supercharger while connecting the other end of said recirculation passage to a suction passage at the down stream of the throttle valve.
CONSTITUTION: The fuel supply to cylinders #4W#6 is cut off when the engine is under light load and, at the same time, a shut off valve 5 is closed to supply all fresh suction air to cylinders #1W#3 to perform partial cylinder running by the cylinders #1W#3. In such engine running with reduced number of cylinders, an exhaust turbine 9 of a supercharger 8 is installed in an exhaust gas passage 4a of the working cylinders #1W#3 and a compressor 10 of the supercharger 8 is installed in a common suction passage 2. The exhaust gas passage 4a at the upstream of the exhaust turbine 9 and the suction passage 2 at the downstream of a throttle valve 3 is connected by an exhaust gas recirculation passage 11 with an exhaust gas recirculation valve 12 installed therein.
