Abstract

PURPOSE: To effectively prevent the weld defects formed with the slit of an unmolten groove part as a start point by providing a gas vent part opening by having a taper on the side opposite from welding between the root face of the groove or base metals and a backing strip.
CONSTITUTION: In arc welding, a gas vent part 6 is opened by having a ≤10° taper between the root face of a groove or base metals and a backing trip 2 on the side opposite from welding side. By this method, the gas expanded by welding heat is allowed to easily escape to the back side of the groove, and weld defects such as blow holes, pits, and slag inclusion which are likely to occur with the slit as a start point is prevented.
